DAW Develops Innovative Use Case for Digital Product Passports in Chem X Project

Chem‑X – Live-Demo at Hannover Fair 2026

The chemical industry is undergoing a transition toward greater digitalization and transparency. DAW is actively contributing to this development and presented an innovative use case from the Chem‑X project at Hannover Messe 2026.

Together with strong partners, DAW is working within the Chem‑X project on a data ecosystem for the chemicals and building materials industries. The goal is to enable efficient, secure, and transparent exchange of product and material data across the entire value chain.

At Hannover Messe at the end of April, DAW showcased how a digital product passport for paints can be implemented with the CHEM2PAINT use case. A key focus is the integration with digital material passports, which provide reliable and verified raw material data.

“With Chem‑X, together with strong partners, we are unlocking the potential for efficient data exchange with suppliers and customers while simultaneously meeting new regulatory requirements. For us, this is a win-win,” says Dr. Nicole Borho, Portfolio Sustainability Manager.

Digital Product Passport Creates Transparency Across the Supply Chain

The project demonstrates how a Digital Material Passport (DMP) functions as an interface between raw material suppliers and manufacturers. The data provided serves as the foundation for the Digital Product Passport (DPP) and enables:

  • standardized data exchange on material composition
  • transparent verification of health and safety requirements
  • insights into environmental metrics such as CO₂ footprint or recycled content

This enables reliable and traceable documentation throughout a product’s entire lifecycle — an important step toward greater sustainability and trust within the industry.

Contribution to Digitalization and Sustainability

Through its involvement in Chem‑X, DAW is strengthening the industry’s digital transformation while at the same time advancing sustainability goals. Key benefits include:

  • more efficient data processes
  • increased transparency for customers, partners, and authorities
  • improved traceability of materials
  • active contribution to shaping future industry standards

The Chem‑X project is developing a secure and interoperable data space for the chemical industry, demonstrating through concrete use cases how digital innovation works in practice.
