Conservation of resources and climate protection
Ober-Ramstadt, 13th February 2013 (DAW) – OBER RAMSTADT. As the first company in its sector, the Deutsche Amphibolin-Werke von Robert Murjahn Stiftung & Co KG (DAW) has been certified to ISO 50001 in the field of energy management. The certificate was issued recently by the Swiss Association for Quality and Management Systems (SQS). It is valid for three years.
The energy management system at DAW comprises the planning and operation of energy generation and consumer units. The company has set itself an ambitious target. By 2015 15% of energy is to be saved (kWh based on the data of 2009). "Primarily, we are concerned with the conservation of resources, the protection of the climate and the reduction of costs," explained DAW Director Rainer Reucker.
At the forefront was the task of taking stock of the existing power sources, the use and consumption of energy and their assessment. New power and heat meters have been installed in the company for this purpose. "It is only by doing this that we can obtain information about the total energy consumption which forms the basis of our energy management system," reports Dr. Guido Schermann, who is responsible as Manager for Engineering & Production for the DAW energy management system.
Using the measured data, a start has been made on planning a building management system for the heat and power supplies. To achieve the set target, projects in the production and warehouse areas are planned. The fact that the subject of energy was already regarded as very important even before the introduction of the management system is underlined by examples such as the operation of a photovoltaic system, a new lighting concept with LED lamps on the employee car park and numerous optimisation activities in production engineering.
The energy management system supplements the existing integrated management system (IMS) at DAW with an important component. "Our IMS so far comprises the modules of quality management, environmental management and occupational safety. Internal and external audits take place regularly and according to internationally recognised standards (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001)," says Brigitte Schilling. She is responsible for the IMS in the company and also handled the successful recertification in the autumn of 2012.
With the energy management system DAW is extending its sustainability strategy. It consists of the action fields of "Sustainable Company" – "Sustainable Products" – "Sustainable Building". In 2011 DAW, as a sustainable company, was awarded the Silver Medal from the Consumer Initiative. In May last year the proprietor-led family company won the n-tv medium-sized company prize 'Hidden Champion' in the Sustainability category. With an annual turnover latterly of over one billion euros DAW is the market leader for building paints in Germany, Austria and Turkey as well as Number 3 in Europe. The Group is most well known for its brands Caparol and Alpina.
